Taxonomy

A classification system that lists organisms in an orderly fashion to show their relationship with respect to other organisms.

A sample taxonomic classification for humans would be:

Domain Eukarya
Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Chordata
Subphylum Vertebrata
Class Mammalia
Order Primates
Family Hominidae
Genus Homo
Species Homo sapiens
Subspecies Homo sapiens sapiens

Tendril

Photo of a plant's tendril.

In plants, a slender climbing organ.

In the image to the left, which was found here, the tendril is the portion of the plant that goes up and to the right.

Thalamus

The part of the brain that deals with the perception of sensation.

Thymine

Cartoon image of the chemical structure of thymine.

A nitrogenous base that pairs with adenine in DNA, and is replaced by uracil in RNA. When you see a string of letters that are used to describe DNA, such as AGTCCGTTATATTGC, "T" stands for thymine.

Transcription

The first step in protein synthesis where a copy of RNA is made from a portion of DNA.

Transfer RNA

Also known as tRNA. A type of RNA that bonds with amino acids and then takes them to a ribosome, which can then pair with an mRNA codon during the translation phase of protein synthesis.

Translation

The stage during protein synthesis where mRNA base sequences are converted into a sequence of particular amino acids in a new polypeptide chain.

Transovarial

Across or through the ovary. A term that refers to pathogens that are transmitted from a maternal organism to its offspring by the invasion of the ovary and the infection of the eggs.

Transpiration

The loss of water vapor from a plant's surface.

Triploblast

An organism that forms three distinct embryonic tissue layers, namely the mesoderm, the ectoderm, and the endoderm.

Triploid

A cell or organism that has three times the number of chromosomes found in a haploid version.

Tuber
