Bromine gets its name from the Greek word "bromos," meaning "stench." Bromine is the only liquid nonmetallic element, and is a reddish color when found in its pure form Br2, which is a dangerous and reactive compound. Bromine is used industrially, but sparingly so. It has been used as a fuel additive, a fire suppressant, and pesticide. Its use is declining, however, as some of the compounds it is found in have been added to lists of chemicals that are destroying the ozone layer.
