Boron gets its name from an Arabic word for borax ("buraq"), which is the name given to several salts containing boron. Humphrey Davy devised the name because of where it comes from (borax) and its resemblance to carbon. Boron is mostly commonly found as borax, Na2B4O7·10H2O, which is also known as tincal. Other forms it is found as include kernite (Na2B4O6(OH)2·3H2O), colemanite (CaB3O4(OH)3·H2O), and ulexite (NaCaB5O6(OH)6·5H2O). Boron is used in a variety of ways, from a glass additive for strength (as in Pyrex, and as a fire-proofing agent. It is also used in metalworking, usually to help improve and enhance the properties of various metals.
