The name for barium is derived from the Greek word "barys" which means heavy, a characteristic of compounds with barium. Barium can be found naturally as the mineral barite, also known as barium sulfate (BaSO4), or less commonly as the mineral witherite (barium carbonate, BaCO3). Barium sulfate is useful in the meidcal field to help diagnose gastric issues, as it is highly insoluble and not easily taken into the body, as well as being a heavy compound that soaks in X-rays. Barium sulfate is also used for oil exploration and in coloring pigments.
