Astatine gets its name from the Greek word "astatos" meaning "not stable." Astatine is an extremely rare element (with a suggested 30 grams of any of the element at any given time in the Earth's crust) as it is highly radioactive and has a short half-life (210At is the longest-lived isotope, and has a half-life of about 8 hours). This instability and short lifespan is the reason why the atomic mass of astatine is given as (210.0) amu, which is based on the longest lived isotope. Astatine is a halogen, and shares some properties with the element iodine.
