Americium is an element that so far has only been seen artificially. It is produced by bombarding plutonium with neutrons in nuclear reactors; this is how the element was initially discovered. First produced in America, which is its namesake, this element might occur in nature, but in such small amounts that it has never been encountered. Americium is radioactive, and is used for γ-radiation and in some smoke detectors.
